This 4-hour course is designed to inform participants of the dangers of unsafe trenching and excavations. Trench Safety and Shoring identifies soil types, defines safety precautions, and reveals warning signs are revealed.
This course applies to all types of trenching excavations and construction near roadways and foundations. Many examples of proper techniques and failures will be examined to prevent fatalities and promote safety. Students will be encouraged to participate and learn as a group. Participation is documented through a short quiz and an attendance record.
This course includes the following topics and activities:
- Define trenching vs excavation, rural vs urban, and identification of soils
- Protective systems: sloping, benching, shoring, shielding; safety precautions
- Failure prevention, warning signs, and analyzing failures
- Training movies and quiz review
Instructor
Steven V. Jenkins has been practicing engineering in Utah and Montana for over 35 years. He holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering and an M.E. in Geotechnical Engineering. He has performed project design and construction on all types of street and highway projects. Steve also has extensive experience in training local governments to encourage solid leadership skills, employee and crew motivation, and performing construction safely.
Steve’s experience practicing design and construction uniquely prepares him to teach these skills so they can be understood by all employees. He has established long-term relationships with city and county professionals by prioritizing clients’ training needs and assisting them with project development.
