Description:
Routine maintenance and safety play an important role in both equipment performance and roadway safety. Maintaining equipment in a proper and timely manner is a foundational cornerstone of transportation, construction, and public works agencies. In an effort to assist agencies in meeting their safety and performance goals, the Equipment Safety and Maintenance Tailgate Talk will provide a casual discussion on introductory maintenance practices, safety checklists, and basic, daily safety procedures and methods for operators and supervisors. It will assist participants with establishing a culture of safety at their worksites and agencies.

This session is appropriate for transportation agency personnel, contractors, asset managers, consulting engineers, inspectors, and decision-makers involved in the planning, execution, and oversight of equipment safety and maintenance.
Instructor:
Michael “Miko” Kees retired from the Washoe County School District in 2021 after 30 years of dedicated service as a Fleet Maintenance Technician, where he managed and maintained a diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment. He brings over 18 years of experience operating and instructing on forklifts, boom lifts, and scissor lifts, promoting safety, efficiency, and proper equipment handling across multiple operations.
Miko is currently a per diem instructor for the Nevada Office of Public Safety and the Regional Emergency Medical Services Authority (REMSA), serving as a National Child Passenger Safety Technician Instructor. He is also an active member of Safe Kids Washoe County and has been involved with REMSA’s Point of Impact program since 2011, continuing his commitment to community safety and education.
