ADA Design Challenges (Reno – Sept 10)

Course Summary:

This 8-hour workshop will provide an overview of the basic requirements to ensure the pedestrian network along our public streets are accessible to all pedestrians. This course focuses on proper design and maintenance of accessible pedestrian facilities in new construction or when pedestrian facilities are altered or added. You will learn roadway owner responsibilities to ensure their pedestrian networks are accessible to pedestrian with various disabilities and how best to achieve that access. This course is taught from the perspective of the Public Rights-of-Way Accessibility Guidelines (PROWAG) in the public rights-of-way and Nevada DOT standard plans. This workshop will include hands-on, outdoor field activities featuring manual wheelchairs, blindfolds, and low-vision googles.

Familiarity with the U.S. Access Board’s draft Proposed Guidelines for Pedestrian Facilities in the Public Right-of-Way is recommended, but not required, prior to attending this course. Learning Outcomes:

  • Become familiar with current standards and guidelines for accessible designs.
  • Identify pedestrian access route and their design limits. 
  • Name the components of ADA curb ramps and describe their design limits. 
  • Recognize the placement and use requirements for Accessible Pedestrian Signals.
  • Determine the number of accessible on-street parking stalls needed.

Intended Audience:

State and local highway engineers, consulting highway design engineers, road/street supervisors, construction & maintenance personnel, and others responsible for regulatory compliance and management of liability risk will find the course beneficial.

ADA Design Challenges is an elective of the Road Scholar Program.

Instructor:

Ted Green, P.E. (NJ, NY, PA) has over 30 years of experience as a civil engineer providing technical training as part of the LTAP community for 15 years on various roadway related subjects across the country. With a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from North Dakota State University, and is a licensed Professional Engineer in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. Ted is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) holding leadership positions at the local level, past Region 1 Governor in New York and New Jersey, and has served as the past chair of national committees.
